What it answers

Every earthquake of the past seven days placed on the map: epicenter, magnitude, depth, recency. Readable at a glance.

When to open it

  • When the yen moves with no obvious headline: a major quake on the Japanese arc gets priced before the Western press picks it up.
  • To place a Disaster headline: exact epicenter, depth, proximity to industrial centers (cross-check with Finance in the reference layers) or to nuclear sites.
  • To test a narrative about an "exceptional seismic wave" against the TDI's Seismic stream: whether the day genuinely stands out or stays inside its baseline.

Anatomy

Switch on SEIS in the layer grid at top right. Each epicenter shows up as a beacon: a solid dot at the center, concentric sonar rings pulsing around it, and the magnitude in white figures inside the dot. Dot size and ring spread are in real meters — zoom in and the beacon grows on screen.

Click one and an info card opens in the top-right corner.

How to read it

The beacon on the map

Dot and ring colorred = MAJOR (M ≥ 7), orange = STRONG (M ≥ 6), amber = MODERATE (M ≥ 5), slate = LIGHT (M < 5). The color fades for deep quakes — a very deep event stands out less than the same magnitude near the surface.
Figures in the centerMagnitude to one decimal.
Concentric ringsPulsing animation (≈ 6 s). The ring radius carries the order of magnitude of the felt radius — an M7 covers far more ground than an M5.

The info card (click an epicenter)

BlockHow to read it
HeaderMAJOR / STRONG / MODERATE / LIGHT at top left, magnitude M{x.x} large on the right.
LocationThe USGS place name (Off the east coast of Honshu, Japan…).
DEPTHDepth in km, followed by a class badge: SHALLOW (< 30 km), INTERMEDIATE (< 70 km), DEEP (< 300 km), VERY DEEP.
CoordsLatitude / longitude to three decimals.
TimestampFull UTC time plus a relative one (Just now, Nm ago, Nh ago, Nd ago).
USGSThe event's USGS identifier. Clicking the card opens the relevant Intel page in a new tab.

Controls

The layer reloads automatically every 5 minutes (the USGS cadence).

Cross-check with other Hawkline features

  • A day heavy in MAJOR / STRONG: TDI, Seismic stream — confirm whether the tape is off baseline or still within range.
  • An epicenter in an exporting region (Chile, Peru, Australia): cross-check with TRADE and the ports to get ahead of supply-chain breaks.
  • An active ZONE nearby: the event can add to a signal count that is already loaded.

Keep in mind

  • No tsunami warning, no damage estimate. Magnitude, depth, location — nothing else. The human severity of an event doesn't follow from an M number.
  • Depth dims the color, not the magnitude shown. An M6 at 400 km comes out duller but is still an M6 — to read surface danger, go by the depth badge.
